Explore the Cape...
Peninsula Tour – Full Day
We start in Cape Town and meander around the eastern slopes of the Table Mountain range to the Southern Suburbs, past the University of Cape Town and into Newlands. We drive through the campus of the oldest school in South Africa dating back to 1829 and continue through the oak lined avenues and lush green suburbs. A drive through the Constantia valley to Muizenberg and along Boyes Drive, through the coastal towns of St James, Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek and Simonstown. We stop at various scenic points of interest for photographs and some history lessons.
We visit the unique colony of African (Jackass) penguins at Boulders before entering the floral reserve of the Cape Point Nature Reserve, home to many species of fynbos, reptiles and birds. A funicular ride to the lighthouse at the tip of the Peninsula at Cape Point makes a perfect vantage position to view the Cape of Good Hope.
Lunch is at the restaurant perched on top of the cliffs at Cape Point or my favorite, a take away sandwich and beer at the water’s edge away from the curious baboons and other tourists. A scenic drive along the Atlantic Coast taking in Scarborough, Kommetjie, Noordhoek over the breathtaking Chapman’s Peak Drive to Hout Bay, Llandudno, Camps Bay, Clifton and Sea Point ends this wonderful day’s excursion.
Winelands Tour – Full Day
A trip to the famous Stellenbosch, Paarl and/or Franschhoek vineyards. This tour is a wine tasting tour, stopping off at four or five different wine estates, and a brief tour through the City of Oaks steeped in history and old Cape Dutch architecture. We visit some off the beaten track estates that date back to the1690’s. Lunch is at a restaurant overlooking the valley and vineyards.
Riebeek Kasteel – Full Day
We drive out to the farming area of Malmesbury about 40 minutes out of Cape Town. From here it is a short drive over a stunning mountain pass to the small town of Riebeek Kasteel, home of the South African olive industry. We do olive and wine tasting before heading into the town for lunch at a uniquely South African intimate restaurant. We visit Goedgedacht farm which is home to a thriving olive production but also an amazing social upliftment program called “Path out of Poverty”.
West Coast Day Trip – Full Day
We leave Cape Town and stop briefly at Bloubergstrand to view and photograph Table Mountain across the bay. We then continue our journey to the West Coast National Park and Postberg. In season (Aug – Oct) you will come across fields of wild flowers all the way along the edge of the Langebaan lagoon. View this incredible transformation of ordinary landscape into fields of spectacular wildflowers. Keep an eye out for antelope, cape gannets, penguins and flamingos as we travel through the reserve. Surrounded by hills and skirting the Atlantic Ocean, its picturesque views combined with the fragrance of wildflowers, makes this a delightful experience.
Hermanus Whale Tour – Full Day
We take the coastal road via Betty’s Bay and the Harold Porter Botanical Garden to the coastal holiday resort of Hermanus where we watch the whales in Walker Bay (seasonal June to November). A scenic drive along the Rotary path in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve is followed by a walk along the coastal cliffs before
having a lunch overlooking the whales frolicking in the bay. Return to Cape Town via Sir Lowry’s Pass.
Tip of Africa Tour - Overnight
This is the basic Hermanus Whale Tour but it includes the fishing villages of Arniston, Struisbaai and Cape Agulhas. You can climb the lighthouse at the southern tip of Africa and view where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet. We overnight on an old Cape Dutch farm, Zoetendalsvallei – the most southerly farm in Africa. It has been in the van Breda family since the 1700’s and my good friend Michael van Breda is the current farmer. This stop-over includes a tour around the farm, home to the largest natural freshwater lake in Southern Africa, a guided walk through the limestone fynbos, and a wonderful candlelit dinner in the farmhouse.
The next morning we head back to Cape Town via the farming town of Bredasdorp where we will stop in at the famous Shipwreck Museum. Then via Napier and Caledon, we meander slowly through agricultural land and back to Cape Town via Sir Lowry’s Pass.
